This is a holiday that makes no sense. I'm not complaining, of course. I think New Year's Day is a holiday for two reasons: 1) a soft landing after Christmas; 2) an excuse to drink heavily. In my view, Christmas is over-hyped and I don't need an excuse to drink heavily, but gather ye rosebuds and all that.
